Disclosure: We make Flashlight Pro, one of the apps compared below. We've tried to keep this comparison neutral and factual.
Last checked: October 2026.
Short answer: you do not need one for basic use â the torch is in Control Centre on iPhone and Quick Settings on Android. An app earns its place only if you want strobe or SOS modes, adjustable brightness, or a coloured screen light. Be wary of any flashlight app requesting more than camera permission; the category has a long history of adware.
Our own Flashlight Pro app is built around exactly those extras â strobe, SOS and (on supported hardware) brightness control.
Criteria We Compared On
| Criterion | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Permissions | A torch only needs camera access; anything more is a red flag |
| Screen light | A colored, wide light source as an alternative to the LED |
| SOS / strobe | Signaling and emergency modes beyond plain on/off |
| Offline | Core torch function shouldn't need a network connection |
| Ads / tracking | Intrusive ads and excess tracking defeat a quick utility |
Do You Need a Flashlight App?
Every Android phone has a built-in flashlight toggle in the quick settings panel. So why download a flashlight app?
- Screen light â use your screen as a soft, colored light source
- SOS mode â international distress signal for emergencies
- Strobe/disco â adjustable blinking for parties or signaling
- Quick Settings tile â a one-tap shortcut alongside your other toggles

- Ads â intrusive ads defeat the purpose of a quick utility
- Size â should be small (under 10MB)
- Reviews â check for complaints about battery drain or ads
